Any type of exercise is beneficial to your health. Some types of exercises are easier to do than others due to mobility issues. However, no matter what your physical condition, you should strive to include three different types in your daily routine:
Cardiovascular exercise to increase endurance and raise heart rate. Walking, running, dancing, tennis or swimming are all examples of cardiovascular exercises. Exercise in the water is beneficial for many people with mobility problems, as the body is supported and the risk of discomfort from muscles or joints are reduced. You can still do cardiovascular exercises if you are confined to a wheelchair or chair.
Strength Training Exercises involves using weights or resistance to build bone and muscle mass, improve balance and prevent falls. You will focus on upper body strengthening if you have restricted mobility in your legs. If you are recovering from a shoulder injury for example, the focus would be on strengthening your legs and core.
Flexibility Exercises can help you improve your range of movement, reduce stiffness and pain, and prevent injury. Yoga and stretching exercises are examples. You can still benefit from flexibility and stretching exercises, even if your legs are limited in mobility.
